Meridian Medical Management (Meridian), a 20-year-old, private-equity backed business with over $100M in annual revenue, provides Revenue Cycle Management (RCM) services and software solutions to over 40,000 medical providers nationwide. Despite a long track record of success, Meridian was struggling to compete in the market due to its outdated infrastructure and legacy applications.
Challenges
Meridian was facing several hurdles that were preventing it from competing in the market effectively. First, it was struggling to support and maintain its legacy technology because the necessary technical documentation was outdated or missing. The institutional knowledge of the legacy technology was limited to a few key IT personnel, which posed a serious business continuity risk. Also, the client was incurring high infrastructure costs as well as excessive spending on software licenses. These licensing and infrastructure contract renewals were rapidly approaching, which meant that the rehosting of the client’s applications needed to happen very quickly. The client was also facing compliance vulnerabilities related to HIPAA requirements.
Solution Requirements:
Meridian was looking for a partner who could help them overcome these challenges and quickly architect and execute a digital transformation plan. The solution requirements were:
- A vetted migration plan within 3 months
- Migrating 1,400 customer instances with no unplanned downtime within 9 months
- Retaining and reskilling key IT personnel
- A HIPAA-compliant cloud environment
Solution Technologies:
Symphonize was engaged to help Meridian overcome its challenges and meet its solution requirements. The technologies used by Symphonize included Amazon EC2, Amazon S3, Amazon RDS, AWS Application Migration Service, AWS Database Migration Service, and Veeam (Backup & Recovery).
Outcomes:
The digital transformation project led by Symphonize was a major factor in the acquisition of Meridian by a leading provider of cloud-based healthcare IT solutions.
The project achieved a 60% savings on infrastructure alone and reduced costs by $300K/year by eliminating middleware to launch products. The legacy applications were re-platformed months ahead of schedule, which was a significant accomplishment.
The project also improved the Restore Point Objective and Restore Time Objective from days to hours. The new cloud-based delivery model enabled a smooth transition to remote work during the pandemic. Finally, key staff with crucial institutional knowledge were retained and reskilled, which was crucial to the success of the project.
The Client's View
“It's rare to find a migration partner that can elegantly integrate your product roadmap with your cloud lift strategy. Symphonize played a major role in our transformation from a server-based to a cloud-based delivery model,” said Terry Leahy, former CEO of Meridian Medical Management.
