Meridian Medical Management (Meridian), a provider of Revenue Cycle Management (RCM) services and software solutions, was struggling to compete in the market due to outdated infrastructure, legacy applications, and reliance on manual business processes, which were found to be ten times more expensive than automated ones.
The company faced expensive software licensing and infrastructure contract renewals, technical documentation was out-of-date or missing, and institutional knowledge of legacy technologies resided in a few key IT personnel. Furthermore, there were security, business continuity, and HIPAA compliance vulnerabilities that needed to be addressed.
To overcome these challenges, Meridian Medical Management selected us to architect and execute a digital transformation plan in concert with the client’s team. The first step was to rapidly migrate Meridian’s data from an expensive co-location data center to a HIPAA-compliant cloud environment. This was done using AWS EC2, S3, Database Migration Services, Application Migration Services, and RDS.
Within three months, we delivered a vetted, comprehensive migration plan, and within nine months, had migrated 1,400 customer instances with no unplanned downtime. Crucially, Meridian’s IT personnel were able to operate in the new environment because we engaged them in hands-on training from the earliest stages of the project.
Additionally, we developed a comprehensive automation solution for key RCM functions including determining patient eligibility, providing medical records to payers, checking insurance claim status, and resubmitting denied claims. Our end-to-end automation leveraged AWS, UiPath, .NET, and Kibana and integrated seamlessly with a variety of end-customer Practice Management and Electronic Medical Record systems.
The outcomes of this digital transformation were significant. Meridian achieved a 60% savings on infrastructure alone, replatformed multiple legacy apps months ahead of schedule, and reduced costs by $300K/year by eliminating middle-wear to launch products. The company was able to transition easily to remote work during the pandemic and was ultimately acquired by a leading provider of cloud-based healthcare IT solutions in June 2020.
